A new species of the South American genus Apistogramma has been described by Uwe Römer and Ingo Hahn in a recent issue of the journal Vertebrate Zoology. The new species is named Apistogramma barlowi in honour of George W. Barlow, one of the most productive and notably leading behavioural ichthyologists of the last decades.

A new species of the South American genus Crenicichla has been described by Carmen Montaña, Hernán López-Fernández, and Donald C. Taphorn in a recent issue of the journal Zootaxa. The new species is named Crenicichla zebrina, from the common zebra for the striped African equid, referring to the zebra-like pattern of vertical dark bars in the caudal part of the bodyl.

Two new species of darter tetra have been described from eastern Brazil by Brazilian scientists Weferson da Graça, Carla Pavanelli, and Paulo Buckup in the latest issue of the journal Copeia. The two new species are named Characidium nupelia and Characidium xavante. Characidium is the most speciose genus of the family Crenuchidae, including 50 valid species, distributed in most freshwater drainages in tropical and subtropical areas of the Neotropical Region located between eastern Panama and La Plata, Argentina.

A new species of South American killifish lacking pelvic fins has been described by Wilson Costa and Gilberto Brasil in a recent issue of the journal Copeia. The new species is named Rivulus planaltinus, from the Portuguese name for the county where the type locality is located (Planaltina means from the high plains), and is a member of the Melanorivulus subgenus.
